Safe Sleep for Newborns: What Every Parent Should Know

Sleep deprivation makes everything harder — including remembering safe sleep rules at 3am. That’s one reason Atlanta families hire overnight newborn care: so someone trained, awake, and accountable is watching your baby while you rest.

At Night Nite Babies, safe sleep is not optional. It is the foundation of every overnight shift. Here’s what that means in practice.

The ABCs of Safe Sleep

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends these core principles for infants under one year:

  • Alone — in their own sleep space, not sharing a bed with adults or siblings
  • Back — placed on their back for every sleep, including naps
  • Crib — firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet only — no blankets, pillows, bumpers, or stuffed animals

Room Environment

Temperature matters. Overheating is a risk factor. Night Nite Babies specialists maintain the sleep environment at 68–70°F and dress babies appropriately for the room — not overbundled.

Other environment guidelines our specialists follow:

  • No weighted sleep products, swaddles past rolling age, or inclined sleepers
  • Pacifiers offered when appropriate (once breastfeeding is established, if applicable)
  • Hourly crib checks logged during every shift
  • Smoke-free environment

Night Nite Babies Standard

We do not negotiate on safe sleep. Ever. Every Care Specialist is trained in current AAP guidelines and follows them without exception — even when a tired parent asks for an exception at 2am.

Common Safe Sleep Mistakes

Even well-intentioned parents make these errors — especially when exhausted:

  • Bringing baby into the adult bed “just for a few minutes”
  • Using a car seat or swing for routine sleep outside the car
  • Adding a blanket because the room feels cool to the adult
  • Using crib bumpers or soft bedding for aesthetics
  • Placing items in the crib for comfort (loveys, pillows, positioners)

Safe Sleep During Overnight Shifts

When your Night Nite Babies specialist arrives for a 10pm–6am shift, they review your baby’s current sleep setup, confirm safe sleep compliance, and maintain documentation throughout the night. Before they leave, you receive a shift note covering feedings, sleep stretches, and any observations.

You wake up rested — and informed.
